As the global industrial architecture realigns towards resilient, high-purity supply chains, the bilateral relationship between India and Japan has evolved into a critical economic corridor driven by capital, capability, and shared conviction. Launched in 2023, 3one4 Capital's Emergent programme connects select portfolio platforms directly with market-leading global institutions. For its fifth edition, Emergent returned to Japan from 13 to 16 October 2026, bringing a curated cohort of seven technology companies into structured commercial engagements across Tokyo and Hamamatsu.
Through targeted one-on-one meetings, the cohort aligned its capabilities with the strategic procurement and technology priorities of more than 100 Japanese corporate partners, CIOs, and institutional allocators. By combining Indian technology architecture with Japanese precision systems engineering, the programme demonstrated how cross-border institutions can serve global markets. Extending activities into Shizuoka Prefecture's manufacturing heartland further established operational linkages between Indian engineering platforms, municipal leadership, and specialised manufacturing firms.
Anchoring the macroeconomic and corporate balance sheet layer of the corridor, the flagship Emergent India Showcase Event opened at Kudan Kaikan Terrace in Tokyo. Pranav Pai, Managing Partner and Chief Investment Officer at 3one4 Capital, mapped the macroeconomic shifts redefining India's position in global technology supply chains. India's startup ecosystem, now the third-largest in the world with over 200,000 startups and 131 unicorns, has created more than $650 billion in enterprise value. The primary driver of Indian entrepreneurship has decisively shifted from domestic consumer internet platforms to deep science, sovereign material engineering, and applied artificial intelligence.
Pranav outlined six structural shifts accelerating India's technological trajectory:
Accelerating state-backed capital deployment, 6 gigawatts of data centre capacity are currently under construction alongside 14 active semiconductor manufacturing facilities. For Japanese corporate partners, India offers a deep pool of technical talent, state-aligned R&D infrastructure, and a trusted, democratic partner for long-term co-development.
Co-hosted alongside Universal Materials Incubator (UMI), the Emergent India Showcase Event convened more than 100 Japanese corporate executives, innovation heads, and institutional allocators. Dr. Shosuke Kiba, CEO and Managing Partner at Universal Materials Incubator, presented on bilateral collaboration models, preceding a fireside discussion titled "A Friendship for the Future: India, Japan and the Next Era of Industry" between Tatsuya Terazawa, Chairman of the Institute of Energy Economics, Japan, and T.V. Mohandas Pai, Chairman of 3one4 Capital.
The showcase centred on deeptech, advanced manufacturing, and intelligent industry vectors. Live product demonstrations highlighted how portfolio platforms address critical industrial bottlenecks and codify the tacit knowledge historically confined to human operators. By enabling machines to learn, augment skilled labour, and orchestrate intelligent factory ecosystems through Physical AI, the presenting companies demonstrated tangible solutions across critical industrial domains:
While Tokyo anchored the capital and strategic policy layer of the corridor, enduring industrial alliances demand integration at the physical execution layer, where components are actually cast, sensors are calibrated, and factory lines operate. On 13 October 2026, 3one4 Capital led the delegation to Hamamatsu in Shizuoka Prefecture, a manufacturing ecosystem globally recognised for establishing the most exacting standards in precision engineering, detail, and quality.
Hamamatsu's industrial engine is propelled by the historic “Yaramaika” spirit: a regional bias for action translating to "Let us build it, let us give it a try." This ethos transformed a coastal basin into one of the densest manufacturing centres of the modern world.
The region's industrial lineage is an unbroken, century-long evolution of physical material mastery. The same metallurgical and casting techniques honed by artisans crafting concert pianos for Yamaha and Kawai laid the foundational tolerances required to cast motorcycle engines and precision transmissions for Honda and Suzuki. That physical discipline extended into deep science, where Shizuoka's early breakthroughs in cathode-ray tubes paved the way for Hamamatsu Photonics, whose quantum optical sensors now detect single photons at CERN's Large Hadron Collider.
This legacy intersects directly with the 3one4 Capital thesis. Hamamatsu holds unmatched institutional mastery over physical materials, mechanical tolerances, and hardware reliability. Indian deeptech platforms bring computational scale, algorithmic agility, and modern software architectures to augment this physical base. By connecting Indian software capabilities with Japanese precision manufacturing, founders can digitise accumulated shop-floor mastery and build the next generation of intelligent factory platforms.
The Hamamatsu programme established direct operational linkages across three structured engagements:
Constructing enduring cross-border institutions requires sustained alignment between high-velocity technology builders and established industrial majors. Connecting Indian software architecture, artificial intelligence models, and deeptech research with Japanese corporate balance sheets, precision engineering, and systems mastery constructs the foundational infrastructure for long-term international expansion.
As the global economy grows increasingly multipolar, industrial resilience is forged not through transactional trade, but through deliberate, structural co-development. The strategic partnership between India and Japan holds the potential to shape the future of global intelligent manufacturing. Through the Emergent platform, 3one4 Capital remains committed to accelerating the deployment of our portfolio platforms across global markets, deepening strategic partnerships with Japanese institutions, and co-authoring the next chapter of international industrial growth.
